Center for German and European Studies

Center for Urban and Regional Affairs (CURA)

  • Programs for Faculty Initiated Projects: Support for faculty public policy research that involves interaction with community groups or government agencies in Minnesota.
    Award: Summer salary plus RA. Deadline: Late March.
  • New Initiatives Program: Support for new projects outside of existing program areas.
    Award: ½-time RA for one or two semesters. Deadline: N/A.

Center for Writing

  • Research grants: Center for Writing offers small grants to support writing in disciplines and writing across the curriculum.
    Award: $2,500 to $7,500; Letter of Intent Due: February 1, 2010; Full Application (if invited) Due March 29, 2010.

College of Liberal Arts

  • InfoTech Fees Program
    The College of Liberal Arts Office of Information Technology (CLA-OIT) and the CLA Student Technology Fee Committee are pleased to unveil a new internal grant program for CLA faculty, staff, and departments seeking funds for technology equipment and technology-rich projects that enhance the learning experience for our undergraduate and graduate students.
    Awards: up to $5,000 for support or up to $50,000 for equipment.
    Deadline: October 22. Call for proposals.
  • Internal Awards and Funding Sources Available to CLA Faculty

  • Research Fellowship Supplement
    Supports regular faculty who have received national or international research fellowships. Applications may be submitted at any time.
  • Sabbatical Leave and Sabbatical Supplement
    Sabbatical leaves provide for a development leave up to one year at one-half salary and full benefits. Sabbatical leaves may be requested at any time. Sabbatical supplements provide additional support of up to 30% of the base salary. Sabbatical supplements are awarded competitively. Applications are reviewed annually during fall semester.
  • Scholar of the College
    Awarded annually by the College of Liberal Arts in recognition of outstanding achievement by tenured faculty in the college.
  • Scholarly Events Fund
    Supports scholarly events organized by CLA faculty, or in which faculty play a major role, especially when such events promise to make known to the broader community the strengths of the scholarly activities of the college and its faculty.
  • Single Semester Leave
    Single semester leaves provide opportunity for a development leave of one semester in length at full salary and benefits. Single semester leaves are awarded competitively. Applications are reviewed annually during fall semester.

An arts and humanities endowment supported by the McKnight Foundation, the Imagine Fund provides faculty research awards, visiting distinguished professorships, and a special events fund.

Institute for Advanced Study

  • Research and Creative Collaboratives: Support for collaborative groups, focusing on a specific area of inquiry.
    Award: Up to $20,000.
    Deadline: Mid January.
  • Residential Fellows: Single semester, residential fellowship in the IAS, in support of a specific research or creative project.
    Award: Full course buyout for one semester.
    Deadline: Early October.
  • University Symposium Awards: Support for research or creative work related to the topic of the University Symposium.
    Award: Varies.
    Deadline: Mid-January and Mid-March.

  • Proposal Development Grants: Funding for graduate students and faculty to develop and submit population-related research proposals to external funding agencies.
    Award: Typically under $10,000.

Office of the Vice President and Vice Provost for Equity and Diversity

  • IDEA Grants Program: Innovation, Diversity, Equity, and Achievement
    Established by the Office of the Vice President and Vice Provost for Equity and Diversity, the University of Minnesota IDEA (Innovation, Diversity, Equity, and Achievement) Grants Program seeks to infuse equity and diversity into every aspect of the University’s work and operations by funding creative yet pragmatic proposals for projects that address issues of institutional equity and diversity.

Office of International Programs (OIP)

  • OIP is in the process of developing additional grant opportunities.  Check their website for updates. 
  • OIP International Travel Grants: Funding for University faculty on all campuses to participate in one-time research or conference opportunities, or to support initial phases of projects that will ultimately be funded by other sources.
    Award: $1,000 to $1,500.
    Deadlines: Early April or early December, depending upon time of travel.
  • Walter H. Judd International Graduate and Professional Fellowships: Support for travel, living, and allied expenses of students abroad.
    Award: Up to $2,000.
    Deadline: Early February.

Office of Public Engagement

  • Engaged Departments Grant: Supports departments that wish to develop or strengthen research­- or teaching-focused university/community engagement initiatives for faculty and/or students.
    Award: Up to $10,000.
    Deadline: December 15.

Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR)

  • Minnesota Futures Grant Program: Support for two phases of interdisciplinary collaborative projects. Phase 1 solicits proposals to develop and convene interdisciplinary symposia around research questions of current significance. The purpose is to encourage development of interdisciplinary research proposals that will be submitted as part of Phase 2 of the program. Two awards of up to $25,000. Phase 2 will be a call for interdisciplinary research proposals that originate from the symposia. Up to three awards of $250,000 each will be offered to proposals submitted by participants in the symposia funded in Phase 1.
  • RCR Continuing Education Awareness/Discussion Small Grants Program: Support for the development and organization of learning activities on research/professional ethics topics.
    Award: up to $3,500. Deadline: October 19, 2009, February 1, 2010, April 30, 2010 and June 30, 2010.
  • UROP -- Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program: Support for undergraduate students working with a University of Minnesota Faculty Mentor.
    Award: Student stipends of up to $1400 and research expenses of up to $300.
    Deadline: March 8.

Senior VP for Academic Affairs and Provost

  • Arts & Humanities Imagine Fund: A new fund to support a broad range of faculty activities in the arts, humanities, and design across the University of Minnesota system. The Imagine Fund series of programs begins in fall 2008 and will be fully phased in by 2009. Grant programs include: Special Events Grant Program, Course Release Fund & Arts & Humanities Faculty Awards.

Women's Center

  • Awards, grants, and scholarships
  • The Women’s Center invites nomination for distinguished faculty and staff at the university.  They also sponsor student scholarships and women student travel grants.
  • Special Grants: Support intended to foster and support increased awareness, improved understanding, and institutional change with respect to the campus climate for women faculty, staff, and students, including women of diverse racial, ethnic, and religious backgrounds, women with disabilities, women with diverse sexual orientations, and women from diverse social and economic backgrounds.
    Awards: $500 to $1,000 for Short-Term Projects and up to $2,500 for Institutional Change projects.
    Deadline: February
